More
about the Bulbs... IMHO:
Bulbs,
of course, need replacement after so many hours of use.
I replaced
the ones that I used the most. There are currently more lights
included in this... sale... today than when I originally purchased
the kit. Replacement bulbs are readily available from Cool-Lux
and other lighting distributors. Other brands of MR-16 bulbs
can be substituted too. I have found them online for much
less than originals, around $7.00 apiece. Ebay has many listed,
often for less still.
My fave...
from Cool-Lux is the FOS 11, a 150-watt bulb (or its equivalent)
as it provides more than adequate light for intimate scenes,
(interviews, etc.) and lasts considerably longer than its
250-watt counterpart. When used with one of the two light
dimmers, the bulbs life can be extended many times, with little
sacrifice in video quality.
FYI: In
large environments, I found that a pair of inexpensive 500-watt
halogen work-lights, with diffusion material and/or daylight
colored gel
script-clipped in front of them
provided
more than sufficient background illumination to fill the overall
space, while the Mini-Cools do the precision work.
Diffusion
gels clipped to the barn doors of some of the mini-cools are
wonderful at creating super soft light, especially appreciated
by female video subjects. Cool-lux now makes a dedicated,
though pricier, soft box attachment to duplicate this process.
Pricing
Details - Cool-Lux
As a lighting
kit, the StarPak sits somewhere between this year's high-end
key light "Studio Pack"
with 4 mini-cools
+ an inexpensive camera light... and their simpler 3-light
"Hi-Def Kit" package as currently described on the
Cool-lux site.
Studio
Kit LK 2202 lists today for $2,494. A typical web retailer,
B&H Photo, discounts it to $2,099.95. After subtracting
full list cost for items not included in it, and adding items
not included in the "studio pack" the difference,
approx. $335 dollars suggests that a StarPak today would list
for close to $2,160.00. or ($ 1,814 discounted).
Similarly,
the less complete Cool-Kit Hi-Def Kit (LK2205) lists for $1695.00
today. (B&H Price: $1,399.95) Adding an extra light and
attachment accessories, then subtracting mostly umbrella and
umbrella mounts; the new total list would be close to $1,933
or ($1,623 discounted). The provided number of expendable
light bulbs, top-of the-line status and case size may make
up for the slight price discrepancies.
For the
sake of argument
split the difference... this set would
list today for halfway between the other two after all adjustments
or
for about $2046 list or ($1,718 discounted).
I am
offering this very functional & healthy kit for about 1/2 of what you would pay to duplicate this package. $859.00 A true bargain.
I
may consider reasonable Best-Offer bids.

COOL-LUX
"STARPAK" LIGHTING KIT LK2350 w/4 MINI_COOL FIXTURES
- As used by NASA on Space Shuttle - The Mini-Cool has been nominated for a Technical Oscar and is -Green- Energy Efficient
Throughout
the years, Cool-lux has created some very efficient high quality
lighting kits, which are repackaged and reconfigured every
so often. Offered here is the "StarPak" LK2350,
which was the Cool-Lux top of the line kit at the time I purchased
it new. It comes with 4 Mini-cool fixtures and abundant accessories.
A complete studio in a case, very space efficient.
I
recommend that you download the PDF Booklets (listed below
on this page) that came with this kit, for the total detailed
lowdown on this kit ,its use and setup. I am also placing
additional information, links to the manufacturer, downloads
& updates to this advertisment, etc. on a "Special
Info" page at this link.

This professional
lighting kit has always impressed me... as it should the buyer.
It is superior in design, performs incredibly well, simple
to set up all-in-one package, lightweight for travel and very
energy efficient, as much as one could hope for. I used it
for both video and still photography.
Video
Editors have commented that light quality made my cameras
appear to be much more expensive than they really were. One
Mini-Cool owner recently remarked "The lights have a
beautiful quality to them perfect for video or portraiture
and I have found them to be much more gentle on your subjects
than Lowel lights, which are fire hot! The light is clean
and detailed... perfect for digital photography or video.
There many extras offering flexibility for any type of situation
encountered during a shoot."
The Mini-Cool
Fixture
From Cool-lux
site: "The Mini-Cool is "today's key light" for Digital
Video Photography. We designed the MR-16 lamp to outperform
650 watt studio fresnel's and 1000 watt open-face fixtures,
projecting a cool-uniform-color-perfect light. "
As a Key-Light
you can mount barn doors, add diffusion materials, colored
gels, or purchase a soft-box to get the effect you want. As
a Daylight source, with our daylight balance filter, it can
compete with 200 HMI's. The Mini-Cool is designed with an
incredibly efficient air-draft system that dramatically improves
lamp & socket life.
The
Mini-Cool has been nominated for a Technical Oscar and selected
by NASA aboard Challenger STS-8 as the first video light ever
in space. Each Mini-Cool is handmade in The United States
of America.
Contents
of this Lighting Kit - StarPak
LK2350
When I
purchased this system, Cool-Lux had just made a slight change
in the "StarPak's" advertised content. They had
discontinued the (2) sliding clamp mounts as previously advertised
(depicted in the downloadable JPG's & PDF's linked on
this page). As part of this model's transition, Cool-Lux added
a second light dimmer, and an extra daylight filter and extra
light diffuser(these items much more useful).
This kit
includes everything as originally purchased
with adjustments
only to the bulb types and the quantity of bulbs (the only
real wearing part of the system)
and the case keys.
I have not found or do I remember every having locking (suitcase
type) keys for this case.

I've scanned

Why
am I selling this kit?
I
was a producer of industrial/corporate videos and high-end
weddings, etc. in another city
at another time, and
made good use of this kit. I have since retired from the video
biz, and have been letting this system sit for too long. It's
about time it gets back into action.
Condition
of this Lighting Kit:
The condition
of this light pack is good to excellent. The case, fixtures
and stands have a few nicks or scratches from happy use, still
they look good and function very well. One fixture, slightly
modified, has a few bolts and washers attached to its support,
(easily removable) which were placed there for mounting a
reflective umbrella on a few occasions (I left them in case
U want 2 do the same). Cool-lux has since learned and now
offers their own adapters and umbrellas for this purpose.
The case foam has a few creases here and there from being
closed with equipment in it
natural wear. (See main photo).
Most
of the accessory clamps etc., used less often, look like Day
One!
The bulbs,
expendable, have all been tested with the exception of one,
and are fully functional. I do not have a record of how many
hours are on each, so for critical moments, always use new
ones that you trust. I may provide links to some sources
for standard bulbs and substitutes on my "Special
Info" page shortly, linked here.
